When I first came across these clutches by Sewn Designs on Instagram, I was completely smitten. They are kind of everything I am or strive to be about; minimal, stylish, and a little tongue-in-cheek. A little company based out of Vancouver, BC, that started out with a vintage sewing machine and an idea, designer Alesia Akehurst made one bralette prototype and people just wanted more. The little business has since grown from a line of handmade lacey bralettes to offer vegan leather handbags, custom clutches, and even mittens. I had a chance to chat with the designer about her designs, her journey in the world of accessories, and what she keeps in her Sewn clutch for the holidays.

STYLUST (S): Thank you for taking the time to chat with us, Alesia. Why don’t you tell us a little about Sewn?
ALESIA (A): Sewn is a handmade brand that I started just under a year ago. At first it was only bralettes and has now expanded into bags and clothing accessories.
S: Obviously being a small business you know how important it is to support other artisans like yourself. Do you do a lot of shopping from local artisans?
A: I definitely do! Almost all my Christmas shopping was done through local brands. It’s also fun to collaborate with other Vancouver designers on new projects, which you’ll see more of on www.shopsewn.com in January!
S: Where do you think your passion for creativity stems from?
A: I have no idea, it’s just always been a part of me! I think the not-so-distant memory of working jobs that didn’t utilize my creativity is what keeps my passion going now, because as hard as it is having your own business this really is the best of both worlds for me.
S: What is one thing you could go back and tell yourself when you were first starting out?
A: Get ready to work your ass off and enjoy every minute of it!
S: Do you have any advice for aspiring designers out there?
A: Know your value – that includes product value and the value of your time. It’s so important because if you don’t, no one else will! I’m currently working with a few other designers to set up workshops so we can pass some of the things we’ve learned onto others starting out. It’s just a brain child right now but something I’m really looking forward to doing in the New Year.
S: What does your ideal fall/winter day entail?
A: I am a total fall & winter fanatic. Fall is my favourite time of year for road trips and hikes – beautiful colours and less people out there! My ideal winter day would include snowboarding then bundling up by the fire, but no matter the season no day is complete without a little design work.
S: What will be in your Sewn clutch this holiday season?
A: The cash/receipt ratio varies but I’ve always got my new Sewn coin/card purse, Epic Blend lip chap, Bite lipstick in Sucre (my fall/winter shade), and business cards!
S: Any promotions or events/announcements that you would want our readers to know about?
A: First and foremost our giveaway, #stylustXsewn! If you’re looking for Christmas presents, my bralettes will be at the Other Vancouver Gastown pop-up shop event November 28-30. Keep an eye on www.shopsewn.com for other exciting things coming in January!
