With all the promises that come with products in the beauty industry, sometimes you just crave something simple. Thanks to Ayu Carlton of natural beauty company, Tokyo Factory, simple is not equal to a beauty routine void of luxury. We stumbled across her oh-so-instagram worthy product shots and minimalist packaging via Etsy and we needed to know more. Her line of natural, cruelty-free, and vegan cleansers, oils, and candles have graced the pages of Refinery29, Martha Stewart Living, as well as one of our personal faves, Brit & Co. We had the chance to chat with Ayu about her lovely product line, her love of pumpkin spice (a girl after our own hearts), and why it’s important to her to shop local.

Thank you so much for chatting with us, Ayu! Please tell us a little more about Tokyo Factory.

TOKYO FACTORY is a LA based Artisan Natural Beauty & Home company. We offer 100% natural, vegan, cruelty-free, and PETA-approved skin care products along with hand poured soy candles.

Where do you think your passion for creativity stems from?

I get inspired by nature. Natural herbs, flowers, nuts and trees are my favorite things in the world since I was a child. I love working with plant-based ingredients such as natural herbs, plant oils, butters and waxes. Each ingredient has its own natural benefits and unique characteristics. With nature’s help, it is my passion to create formulations that are effective to the skin.

Being a small business, why do you think it’s important to shop small?

We really appreciate our customers for supporting a small business like us. We are not a big company, so we can provide a great service and a personal touch. Supporting small local business can also help the community. If the local tax grows, more money can go toward to improving schools, public works and environment, etc.

What is your favorite thing about the Autumn season?

The smell of pumpkin spice. This is something I learned when I first came to U.S. In Japan, there is no pumpkin spice. I love its warm, cozy and sweet aromas.

What can’t you leave the house without?

The Rose Lip Treatment is something I have to have in my purse. I like my lips moisturized all the time.

What advice can you offer aspiring entrepreneurs and creatives?

Don’t give up and have fun! “Always rise after a fall.”
