How to Make a Minimal Macrame Holiday Wreath

There is something so classic and elegant about a lush green Christmas wreath for the holidays, but the last few years I’ve had a bit of an affinity for the minimalist look. I’ve been making my holiday wreaths for a few years and needless to say, it wasn’t always easy. Like most DIY projects, it didn’t work so well the first time around. So, this year I cam fully equipped with the lessons learned from years past. Here’s what I’ve learned; a strong base and floral wire are your best friends. So put on your favorite Christmas music and give this easy wreath DIY a try.

Materials to Make a Minimal Macrame Holiday Wreath

10″ – 18″ Brass hoop
8 strands of 28″ macrame rope
8 strands of 35″ macrame rope
1 strand 28″ rope (to hang it on the wall/door)
Green floral wire (or gold wire)
1 bunch of greenery (Trader Joes, Vons, or any local floral shop)

Step 1: Take one piece of 28″ rope, fold it in half and tie a knot at the open ends creating a loop. Attach to the brass hoop with a larks head knot. Then, starting with the shorter pieces of rope, attach them to the brass hoop with a larks head knot. Do the same for the longer pieces until all the rope is hanging from the brass hoop (short ones on one side and longer ones on the other).

Step 2: Hang it on a wall. Tie two rows of square knots. Trim the rope so that the short ones are all even across the bottom. Do the same for the long ones. You can unravel it for a beachy wave look or keep it as is.

Step 3: Cutting your branches or greenery into smaller pieces, experiment with how you want your wreath to lay. Once you have your idea all figured out, cut 6″ – 8″ pieces of floral wire and wrap around both the greenery and the hoop. You’ll want to adjust the leaves once you’re done so make sure not to wind it too tightly. Continue adding layers of greenery until you have reached the desired fullness.

Step 4: Add your final touches. Adjust the leaves, cut any wonky branches off, trim the rope strands, etc.

Step 5: Hang on a wall or door and enjoy!

That’s it. That’s all. A gorgeous, affordable, and elegant holiday decoration that you can year after year. Just add new greenery.
